Social Networking – Marketing Tool Or Friendship Killer? Part 1

Socail Media11 Social Networking Marketing Tool Or Friendship Killer? Part 1
There’s never been a time for me when I wasn’t marketing something. It all began in 1972. Did the old biodegradable soap thing in my senior year of college as a way to earn some money. Of course, I failed miserably, but I have always been taken with network marketing of one form of another ever since. Anyone who knows me realizes that this is who I’ve always been. I try to look at it from the other side: if someone was always in my face with some new, hot, can’t-miss thing, would I be okay with it. Boy, I don’t know.

Network marketing, multi-level marketing, and all those types of business models have a really bad rep. Honestly, they deserve it. They’ve totally earned the disrespect that defines them. Just the other day, a company that I actually worked for at the corporate level a couple of years ago went under. I totally understand why it all happened, and left the company when I saw the writing on the wall. It just took 2 or so more agonizing years for this “great idea” to fold. And, as you all know, most of these types of things do, sooner or later.

So, why do I persist? I wished I could say “I have absolutely no clue.” But, I totally get who I am. I’m afraid it’s in my blood. While I am no longer involved in anything having to do with multiple levels, bogus claims of earning untold mega-millions from the home while working in my underwear (or worse), I will always be a player. It’s something I’m passionate about, and it gives me hope.

That’s something I’ve always craved, and always will. I just decided to ditch companies and opportunities spouting ridiculous claims that even I know have absolutely no chance of materializing. And, having had a brief fling with amazing monetary success once, way back when, I know there’s always a chance, albeit slim, that it can happen again. Just ask my son, who told me yesterday: “You did it once…”

We all want money (okay, maybe you don’t), but how to get our piece of the action is usually an exercise in futility. The only sure-cure way is to find a brick-and-mortar job that will pay you every 2 weeks like clockwork. The main problem is, of course, that you can’t make very much income this way. However, if it’s the only way, then you just have to accept it. I have a regular job. I actually like it very much. But, probably like you, it doesn’t pay all that much. Bottom line: it still pays.

But, with the Internet Age evolving every second, you have access to opportunity and possibility. But, how to make your way through the unending lot of it is another matter. Would you even know a good thing when and if you saw it? I can’t say I would.

But, I’ve had a little luck lately because a good friend decided to start up his own version of classified advertising and offering printable business coupons that his members can create on his site. Prospective customers can print them up on the spot. It’s a pretty cool innovation. And, I know this guy’s as honest and ethical as the day is long. When he asked me to become involved, the idea grew on me. He wanted me to do what I do best: write, edit and brainstorm. And, this guy is giving most of his profits back to members who feel like promoting his (our) business. No wild claims, no levels, just straight-up really high monthly commissions.

I am in love with the idea that a tiny “David” could become wildly successful among the “Goliaths.” If the whole enterprise ends up being just more pie in my sky, well that’s okay, too. You never know what can happen these days. Catch a lucky break, a little serendipitous mention at just the right time and place, and you can go viral. Ask Sarah Boyle, Google, Facebook or Twitter.

In “Social Networking – Marketing Tool Or Friendship Killer? Part 2,” I will discuss the risks and rewards of bugging your friends and followers.

Social Media – What is it and How Can it Benefit My Business?

Socail Media14 Social Media What is it and How Can it Benefit My Business?
With phrases such as “tweeting”, “un-friending” and “liking” now becoming common place terms, confused business owners frequently ask me “what is social media?” and “how can I use it to promote my business?”

Put simply, social media is people using the web to have conversations. A fairly simple concept, but it’s simplicity shouldn’t be used to underestimate its power. While people may use social networking sites to have conversations about topics as mundane as what they had for lunch, they also delve into more pressing topics, such as politics, religion, world events and even your brand.

In August 2009, Cadbury felt the full force brunt of an anti-Cadbury campaign that disgruntled consumers launched on Facebook. The Facebook pages “Take palm oil out of Cadbury chocolate bars” and “Boycott Cadbury Palm Oil Chocolate” accumulated over 3,500 fans between them and sent such a clear message to the New Zealand confectionery producer that they issued a formal apology to consumers and announced they would cease using palm oil in their products.

Meanwhile, more positive examples of social media “chatter” can be found in the numerous Facebook fan pages dedicated to the Coke brand – my personal favorite being the “It’s not Christmas until the Coke lorry is on the telly” page. People use these pages as a platform to express their appreciation of a particular product or brand and share their experiences. What amazingly powerful information for the Coke marketing machine to have access to – real world examples of what marketing works and what doesn’t.

The opportunity social media presents for your business is the ability to listen, participate and influence these online conversations. Think of it like being able to position your best sales person at the first worldwide networking event. Instead of just “working ” a room, your sales people can “work” the nation, or even the world. How useful would it be for your business to get direct access to your target market and ask them what they want? The return and impact on your internal systems, product/service development and marketing would be immeasurable.

But it is important to know how to stimulate this type of conversation. After all, simply setting up a Facebook page or Twitter account isn’t enough to get people chatting about your business. You need to have a clear social media strategy in place that outlines your goals, guidelines, tactics and even a crisis plan.

Part of this strategy needs to address what type of content you will provide on social networking sites and what resource you will dedicate to this. Many companies make the mistake of setting up a social media presence and either neglect it (dedicating no resource to keep it up to date and interesting), or spend all their time pushing out “hard sell” post after “hard sell” post, and wondering why their fan base isn’t growing.

Like in a face to face networking situation, you can’t spend the entire time talking about yourself -otherwise your potential prospects will quickly excuse themselves (or in the social media landscape “un-friend/un-follow” you) and avoid you altogether. Instead, you need to dedicate resource to engage people by asking them about themselves (and experiences with your brand/products), listen to what they have to say, offer your company’s opinions and share advice/experience. Through this “give and take” philosophy, you can then start weaving in posts promoting your latest product/service launch or special offer. Remember, social media is online conversations, not online broadcasting without a listening ear.

Multi Level Network Marketing – Brand Yourself As a Leader Using Twitter

Branding Yourself21 Multi Level Network Marketing Brand Yourself As a Leader Using Twitter
Twitter.com is the hot social media property where savvy multi level network marketing reps are finding lots of quality leads. If you have been looking for a new venue for recruiting for your MLM business, you’ve got to give Twitter a try.

By now, most people know that Twitter is a microblogging platform where people can send short, 140 character messages that tells those in their network what they are doing. But far from being just a venue for virtual water cooler conversation, Twitter has become a gathering place where people tweet about the news, what’s happening in the world, and even what’s on their supper plate.

This article is going to give you a few tips so that you feel a bit more confident jumping in there and learning how to work twitter in order to brand yourself as a leader in your network marketing organization.

Create your profile

The first thing you need to do is find a good, clear picture of yourself. Create your twitter profile be following the easy steps you’ll find on the website. Either use your name or come up with a catchy twitter handle (@JohnSmith, or @vitaminguy)

Don’t try to get too clever. You want for there to be some association between your twitter handle and who you are or what you do. Use keywords in your short bio and include a link to your blog. Use a custom background that reflects the image of your blog.

Build your network
Add the people in your email contacts who are already on twitter and invite those who aren’t on already to join. Start searching for interesting people to follow. Search for people in your industry, people who share things in common with you, and people who you would probably normally hang out with if you met in person.

Please understand that it will do you no good to have a massively huge number of twitter followers who you have nothing in common with and who don’t care about what you care about. The goal is quality over quantity.

Be a resource
Now it’s time to get in there and mix it up. Start sending out tweets about what you’re up to, tweet your blog posts, re-tweet interesting posts by others in your network and share stuff that you find online with your network on twitter. Share what you know, say smart things, tweet inspirational or controversial quotes. Use your tweets to brand yourself as a leader who is knowledgeable yet approachable.

Now that you have created a network and begun to brand yourself, you can begin tweeting about your company, your opportunity and your products. Keep a healthy ratio of informational tweets to promotional tweets. Social media followers really **** it when people join just to blast their ads, so keep it relevant.

Twitter is a fun way to get exposure and brand yourself in multi level network marketing.

Twitter Marketing Secrets – Learn How to Use Twitter to Market Your Business

Twitter Marketing3 Twitter Marketing Secrets Learn How to Use Twitter to Market Your Business
What is Twitter? Twitter is a Social Media site where you “follow” people and then gain “followers” that is people who follow you back.

What does this mean? This means that you can build a list of people who follow you who you then can send messages to either directly or as a “tweet” which is available to your entire following. You can do this very quickly and simply without having any spam filters or any other interference typically associated with emailing.

Why is this so good? This is so good because it means you can quickly and effectively build a targeted list of followers who you can then send your advertising to.

What is the Catch? As with everything there are catches which is why you need training in how best to use Twitter. Some of the catches include:

Twitter has limits on how many people you add and how you add them per day.

You can’t just get a list and send them your ad and expect them to read and like what you are doing. Remember this is Social Media not selling 101.

There are some good automation tools out there but there are also some bad ones you need to avoid.

You need to learn how to either produce good content of your own or at the very least find other peoples content which you can then pass on to your followers.

You very limited space in which to pass on your message so it must be concise and catchy, and that is not as easy as it sounds.

How do I find people who are interested in what I have to say? There are many different ways but two of the simplest are to follow the followers of the “gurus” like Mike Dillard, Ann Sieg, Randy Gage and many more like them.

The next method I prefer is to go and find people that you think maybe interested in what you are doing. You do this by searching for specific keywords such as MLM or dog handlers depending obviously on what your purpose is in the first place. You then simply add the followers that Twitter comes up with for you to add.

How do I find good content to Tweet? (Remember, we are trying to give people value not just blast them with our ads) This can also be fairly easy. If you are not at the stage of writing or doing your own content then simply go and find someone else’s (DO NOT PLAGIARIZE).

You can then either adapt their content and put your own spin on it or you can just use what they have done always leaving their name attached while still providing your list with good content that they associate with you.

What tools are good automation devices? I like Socialoopmh.com for automating tweets and managing direct messages amongst other things (there is a free and paid version but start with the free as it works well).

To shorten links use bit.ly.com you will understand why this is necessary when you open your account and start posting.

I also have just started using BruteForceTwitter, it looks good for finding followers automatically but I haven’t spent enough time on it yet to recommend it completely.

So that’s Twitter in brief. There is obviously a lot more to learn about so I hope to see you again.
